Beetle

Lis got herself a 1968 Beetle in the spring of 2004, and not long after that I picked up a copy of set 4096. Oddly, I didn't actually think to try building her car until several months after I got the set. I decided to try the construction using only parts in one copy of that set, as it seemed like a fun idea. Here's what I came up with.

Here's Lis's Beetle, just after she got it. I decided not to try to model the in-transit sticker, as Lego hasn't produced any official pieces that look like that.
And here's my version of it, side view. I had a choice between the thin knobby tires and the wide slicks, and I went with the wide ones. I think it gives more of a fun bubbly shape to the car.
The three-quarters view. I'm kind of disappointed with the front fenders; oddly, the set didn't come with any 1x2 yellow plates. I guess the pieces I used give it more of a rounded shape though.
Front view. The real car doesn't have holes in the front fenders that let you see the tires from the front. The real one does, however, have a tiny windshield.
I think that what really inspired me to try building this was the piece that I used as the back lid. I put one on one of those 1x2 hinge bricks one day and thought "Hey, that looks like the back of the Beetle!" I redesigned the rest of the model many times, but kept those two pieces the same each time.
